An African holiday

Located just south of Piggs Peak, the dam has a capacity of 332 million cubic meters of water and a wall height of 115 meters, making it one of the highest in Southern Africa. It is well known for its excellent fishing opportunities and holds the national bass record currently set at 5,3kg! Fed by the Komati River the dam is situated within the Komati Gorge which offers it protection against the elements. As a result of the warm water flowing into it ,there is a healthy water bird population and a variety of small game roaming the banks which can be viewed from the comfort of your houseboat. Swaziland is a pleasant three hour drive from Johannesburg in South Africa and Maguga Dam is just 35 minutes from either Jeppies Reef or Oshoek Border Posts, off the Piggs Peak road – just follow the Maguga Dam signage.

The Maguga Dam Lightleys Holiday Houseboat office is just 500m from the main slipway at the dam in a well-established botanical garden where guests can relax in the comfort of the tea garden while the boat operations are explained to you.

We have strategically placed eight mooring points in the dam, chosen specifically for their good fishing and birding opportunities and their privacy. Our houseboats can sleep up to four people and are superbly equipped for a self-catering getaway, with everything you would need to prepare and enjoy your own food on board, as well as linen. There is a barbeque grill on the deck.

If you tire of relaxing on the deck, fishing, reading, napping or birdwatching, there are numerous activities in the area. Lightleys Holiday Houseboats on Maguga Dam is part of the Swaziland Mountain Meander and guests can enjoy the nearby attractions such as the nearby Tree Top Canopy Tour , or Hawane Resort with its great restaurant, swimming pool, sauna, shop and Bush Spa, as well as the Malolotja National Park, which offers 200km of hiking and mountain biking trails and is home to the highest water fall in Swaziland, the Malolotja Falls.Local activities include horse trails, visits to the Birds of Prey Centre, guided or self-guided mountain biking excursions, quad biking in the Swaziland highlands, guided hikes to the Malolotja Falls, Highveld birding tours, community tours and Tree Top Canopy Tours, and trout fishing in the Malalotja National Park dams and streams (you can hire rods). Visit Ngwenya Glass, the famous glass-blowing factory where crafters make extraordinary glassware from 100% recycled glass.
